St Patrick’s is very proud to be an official ‘Dementia Friendly’ school and this year we have taken part in a number of activities with our friends from the LiveWell Dementia Hub. As part of our involvement in National Dementia Awareness week a group of Year 6 children went over to the Hub to perform some poetry for the elderly.

Popular poems such as ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling, ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae and ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ by Spike Milligan were performed by the Year 6 boys and girls from St Patrick’s to huge applause.

The highlight though of the visit was a chance to write some original pieces of poetry with the elderly people at the Hub. Young and old worked together to produce some lovely and impressive poetry on the theme ‘Memories’. It was a wonderful occasion that we will definitely repeat!

This is one of the poems that we wrote, it’s called ‘Simple Things’

The Simple Things…

I like to knit,

I like to sew.

I like the soaps,

Wherever I go.

I like to read;

I love Vera Lynn.

We will meet again!

I love reading my soap magazines,

And the old cobbled streets,

Which are now so few and far between.
